The Iberian ham arrives to cosmetics market

It is already known we use everything from the pig… but, in addition, in the 21st century the Iberian ham and acorns reinvent their uses and become coveted products for sectors such as cosmetics or interior design.

Iberian ham soap with Designation of Origin or skin creams with acorn oil are just some of the non-food uses that are already a reality and marketed in Spain.

This is the case of the businesswoman Daría Moreno, who has just presented under the 'De Daría' brand, the first soap made from acorn-fed Iberian hams with the Designation of Origin Los Pedroches. In its elaboration process they use, in addition to the unsaturated fat of the ham giving creaminess to the soap, olive oil and aromatic plants giving smell to the product, all grown in the region.

At the moment, four types of ham soap bars (from topped lavender, sage, clove and nettle) are marketed, each with its different anti-aging or moisturizing properties for the skin, but Daría Moreno is committed to expanding the distribution areas and also binge able to market it in gel or even in other uses, such as shaving creams.

Another popular example is the Extremaduran businesswoman Isabel Falcón who had been working on the creation of skin care products from acorn oil for two years. That initial idea became a reality not long ago. The president of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, applauded this initiative, especially for using pasture resources for other purposes than agricultural holding. This is how Bichina natural was born: facial and hand creams, bath gels, body lotions and floral water, all sustainable and respectful with the pasture.

Isabel Falcón knocked on the right doors, perhaps at the right time, getting surrounded by the best team, including the Agrifood Technology Center of Extremadura [Centro Tecnológico Agroalimentario de Extremadura] (CTAEx) or the Dehesa Research Institute of the University of Extremadura [Instituto de Investigación de la Dehesa de la Universidad de Extremadura], which support a very high quality project.

As you can see, ham and acorn not only report benefits to the palate and health, they take care of our skin too. What a wonder, right?

Can you think about any other non-food use of Iberian ham?
